About the Southern Highlands Wine Region

The Southern Highlands is a premium cool climate wine growing area that sits between Sydney and Canberra and the home to some 60 wineries and 16 cellar doors. Sitting at an altitude of around 700 metres is now, after over 17 years of growth, producing many of Australia’s award-winning wines.

The fertile soils, high altitude and seasonal changes are ideal for cool-climate vineyards and a wide range of quality produce. Local specialties include Angus beef, goats, Toulouse geese, Wessex saddleback pigs, yabbies, cheeses, olives and olive oil, truffles, berries and cherries, and pome fruits. Definitely check out our recommendations for best places to eat in the Southern Highlands and sample the local produce.

Our Top Three Wineries for the Southern Highlands

We are picky about our wines, and have provided our top three vineyards that you can’t miss on a day tour. Moving between each of the vineyards below creates a great round trip circuit of the Southern Highlands region and scenery.

1. Joadja Estate

Located just outside Berrima, family run and a joy to visit.  Grape picking runs from March-May and a visit is a must. Joadja was the first vineyard for the region and is a fantastic place to learn more about the history of winemaking for the Southern Highlands region. Worth checking out their Whisky Distillery!

2. Artemis Wines

Artemis Wines have a passion to produce wines of European complexity and structure with intense Australian varietal definition. Planted in 1996 and primarily Pinot Noir grape is a stunning location for a platter lunch accompanied by a glass of their wine or even Honey Mead!

3. St Maur

The vineyard is spread over 16 acres, 700 meter above sea level, dedicated to growing quality north-facing vines. A single estate which produces small batches.
