The Church

This beautiful renovated deconsecrated church can be your home for the weekend.
If you have ever driven through Kangaroo Valley you would have no doubt noticed the historic icon that is “The Church”. Sitting slightly elevated and facing north overlooking the main road with 180 degrees escarpment views, it’s history is scant. Records in the Sydney Morning Herald in February 1887 indicate that the Wesleyan Church bought land in Kangaroo Valley as part of its expansion around NSW in this same year. Other records indicate that building commenced soon after, with the intention to build a sandstone structure. The sandstone footing was completed efficiently, but the stonemason ‘went missing’, and after waiting for his return for 6 months, the church community voted to amend their plans and build a wooden structure on the sandstone footings

The church was operational until the early 2000’s, with many community members recalling their attendance for funerals and weddings until this time. Deconsecrated in the early 2000’s. The Church lay idol for a few years before being purchased as a private residence in 2009. It changed hands a second time in 2014, and underwent some colourful changes, before purchased again in 2019. The home has been modernised and the exteriors painted and a new porch, while maintaining its charm. You will notice the curved pulpit being used as an island bench in the kitchen. You can’t help but enjoy the huge stain glass window, particularly on a sunny morning when it shed colourful light across the floors, and the ambience at night is wonderful. A work of love has been the development of the terraced lawns and vegetable garden, with work still in progress.
Consisting of just the main chapel of the church, lounge room area, dining area, kitchen and most importantly sleeping area on the alter! A separate bathroom with free standing shower and separate small bath. Outside there is a covered area to sit and watch the sun setting over the escarpment and take a wander around the gardens.

A short walk to the local pub, The Friendly Inn. Local deli and eateries and some good retail therapy too! On the local wedding venue bus routes make this very unique home a great option for a short break away.
